Frequently asked questions
What is the PGA and what does it do?

PGA is an organisation that specialises in the building restoration industry. Through registered contractors it provides property owners with PGA insurance backed guarantees for remedial work undertaken. PGA also administers other guarantee schemes as well as providing education, training and guidance for specialist contractors. PGA is a valuable source of helpful impartial advice to property owners who either require or have already had remedial work undertaken.

Is PGA a trade association, product manufacturer or contractor?

It is none of these. It is a specialist provider and administrator of insurance backed guarantees for the remedial treatment industry.

What is an ‘Insurance Backed Guarantee’?

A guarantee given to a customer may prove to be useless at the time of a claim if the contractor has subsequently stopped trading. However a guarantee can incorporate added protection whereby an insurer will stand in place of the original contractor that is no longer trading. A guarantee incorporating this benefit is an ‘Insurance Backed Guarantee’. PGA guarantees naturally incorporate this benefit.

What type of work does the PGA guarantee scheme cover?
The following categories of work are covered by the PGA scheme:

    * Cavity Drainage Membrane
    * Woodworm treatment.
    * Dry rot treatment
    * Wet rot treatment
    * Rising damp treatment
    * Remedial cavity wall-tie installation

What are product manufacturer’s guarantee schemes?

These are sales promotion schemes operated by treatment formulation manufacturers to maintain contractor loyalty and dependence. The manufacturers own products must be used to participate which has the potential to restrict the range of products available to a contractor. Whilst such schemes are designed to support guarantees issued by contractors, they are dependent upon the manufacturer remaining in business or not being taken over or amalgamated.

Who may offer the PGA insurance backed guarantee scheme?

Only a PGA registered contractor who has satisfied and fulfilled the registration requirements of PGA may offer their clients access to use the scheme.

Does PGA stipulate which products or manufacturers have to be used?

No it does not. PGA does however stipulate product types, systems and processes that it will and will not accept if an insurance backed guarantee for the control of rising damp is required. (click here for stipulations) PGA does not insist upon the use of specific product manufacturers thereby allowing contractors the freedom to select the most appropriate materials for the benefit of their clients.

Who applies to PGA for the insurance backed guarantee documentation?

The registered contractor who undertook the work applies to PGA on your behalf. You will be requested by the specialist contractor to counter sign and return the proposal form, which is usually sent to you with your invoice upon completion of the work. The guarantee documents are prepared by PGA, sent back to the contractor for final checking and signing before being forwarded to you for safe keeping.

How much does a PGA insurance backed guarantee cost?

The cost of guarantee registration is dependent upon the category of work being undertaken and the overall contract value. The PGA registered contractor will be able to inform you of the relevant cost applicable to your particular contract or may include it in the overall cost of the work.

Do I have to pay for two separate guarantee registrations if I am having rising damp treatment and t

No you do not. PGA regards rising damp treatment and timber treatment undertaken in the same property at the same time by the same company as a single contract. Only a single registration fee is necessary in this circumstance which is calculated on the total combined contract value. Remedial wall tie contracts however require individual registration.
